How to Create a Network

Applies to CoCoCo platform v1.0.0-rc.31. Every step below was run on that version.

What is a Network?

A Network is the routing boundary for your connected equipment. Devices — a press, an MIS database, an HTTP service — and Controllers, the on-premise bridge that keeps a connection to CoCoCo open, each belong to a Network.

When a Device’s Network contains a Controller, CoCoCo reaches the Device through that Controller. When the Network contains no Controller, CoCoCo contacts the Device directly.

A Device is assigned to a Network, not to a particular Controller. If one Network contains several Controllers, you cannot choose which of them carries a Device’s traffic. If you run more than one Controller, give each its own Network.

Before you start

You need permission to create networks (network:write). To see the Networks page at all, you need network:list or network:read. If Networks is missing from your sidebar, ask your administrator for these permissions.

Create a Network

1. In the sidebar, under IoT, click Networks.
2. Click Add Network.
3. The page New Network opens. Enter a Name, for example Main production floor. The name is required — if you save without one, the form tells you so and nothing is created.
4. Optionally enter a Description.
5. Click Save.

You’ll see the message Network created, and the Network’s own page opens. It has two tabs, Controllers and Devices, which stay empty until you add something to this Network.
